Objectives

According to the survey by NAKS North East Chapter (“NAKSNEC”) History and Culture Research Organization in 2012, around 50% of the Korean schools do not conduct history and culture classes effectively.  Under the current Korean school curriculum and timeframe, there is limited space for students to gain solid understanding and knowledge about their ethnic history and culture.

In order to overcome such limitation, exposure to experience Korean history and culture is required for children.  Thus, NAKSNEC and NAKS-MAC have initiated Korean History and Culture School (“KHCS”) to be held in August 2013.  Our target is to invite 200 Korean American students in grades 4 to 8 who reside in NY, NJ, PA, DE, WV, and CT.

By providing the opportunity to experience Korean history and culture to second generation Korean Americans, this program will help them to understand their heritage and cultivate an inquisitive mind towards Korean history and culture. Furthermore, we strive to instill pride in their rich Korean heritage while they learn its history and culture.

The very first KHCS will start since August 2013. It is planned based on the accumulated experience of the NAKS regional chapters’ member schools regarding history and culture education.  The second purpose of the camp is:  a) to naturally centralize all related lesson plans and activity programs while planning the camp, and b) to share pros and cons of Korean schools’ experience on history and culture education and programs.

All the camp programs are composed of various history and culture educational contents.Based on such contents, School Operation Committee members will standardize program contents using templates.  These kind of database accumulated every year can be great resource that respond to educational organizations’ demands for Korean history and culture education.  Eventually, continuous successful camp operation may contribute to ethnical history and culture education development.
